LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the deadly fires burning across L.A. County.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“Los Angeles is burning on both ends, with more than 22,000 acres up in flames as of 3:30 PM on January 8. Californians are losing their homes, their livelihoods, and their communities. If you or your loved ones have been impacted by these catastrophic wildfires here is a list of resources for support or to donate to relief efforts:

Resources

In this moment of devastation, we must focus on coming together to protect and support our communities. At the same time, we can’t lose sight of the bigger picture: This is the climate crisis at work. Devastation like this is the direct result of corporate polluters’ greed and our inability to transition quickly enough to clean energy and resiliency as a state and as a nation.

Right now, the most catastrophic climate emergencies are happening frequently, but not daily. By the time they’re happening daily, it will be too late.

As California prepares to release its proposed state budget this week, these catastrophic fires are a call to action for our elected leaders. To not just prioritize urgent disaster relief for the moment, but ensure robust investments in climate solutions to prevent the worst and protect communities now and in the future. California can’t afford anything less than visionary, preventative, and robust investments in climate action.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
