OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to state election results following Election Day.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“With almost all of the votes counted in California, state elections results show just how powerful California’s environmental voter movement is even when industry spends millions to block progress. While Big Oil outspent EnviroVoters’ PAC entities 12 to 1, climate justice candidates beat them in 70% of head-to-head races, securing a net gain of environmental champions this year.

The passage of Proposition 4, a historic $10 billion investment in resiliency and clean energy, is the biggest climate win in the country for 2024. With a resounding 59.6% support from voters, it’s clear that Californians’ mandate to elected officials remains steady: lead on climate action and invest in climate justice solutions.

Defeating Big Oil-backed candidates like Edith and Carlos Villapudua in the Central Valley, with climate champions like Rhodesia Ransom and Jerry McNerney, in the primary was a huge statement, and it didn’t stop there. In some of the toughest races up against Big Oil, voters saw through the millions spent to confuse them and voted to elect the clear climate justice candidates like Sade Elhawary and Robert Garcia.

With federal elections resulting in a divided landscape, California is now the country’s most important line of defense against attacks on our safety and future, and we bear the responsibility to continue to make progress and lead state action. We have unique power and responsibility in this moment, and with this exciting new class of climate justice champions, our state can push bold policies and inspire national and global action.”
