SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Senate Environmental Quality Committee’s 5-3 vote, advancing the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act and moving California closer to holding the world’s biggest fossil fuel companies accountable for their role in the climate crisis.
Statement from Melissa Romero, Policy Advocacy Director, California Environmental Voters:
“This is a major milestone in the fight for climate accountability and a testament to the growing momentum behind the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act. It’s just one step in a longer fight but a crucial one. For too long, frontline communities have paid the price for corporate greed, and today’s vote moves us closer to righting that wrong.
Every time this bill advances, we’re proving that Californians want fossil fuel companies to take responsibility for the destruction they’ve caused. Now, we take this fight to the next stage. With the continued support of legislators, advocates, and communities demanding action, we can get this bill across the finish line and make polluters pay.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
