Big Oil and corporate polluters are on the verge of gaining unprecedented influence in Sacramento over lawmakers thanks to AB 84. This wrongheaded legislation would undo decades of progress on campaign finance reform by allowing unlimited contributions to legislative leadership — even while deciding votes on key legislation.
AB 84 would allow California’s legislative leaders — both Democrat and Republican — to get four new political party committees, increasing the amount of special interest contributions they’re allowed to raise for candidates and independent expenditures. AB 84 means Big Oil will have an even greater influence on legislators and voters — without any oversight or accountability.
AB 84 is opposed by BOTH the California Democratic and Republican parties, the Los Angeles Times and Sacramento Bee, the League of Women Voters and California Clean Money Campaign — as well as a top legislative priority for CLCV to defeat!
In fact, not a single organization has taken a support position on this bill, but that hasn’t stopped legislative leaders from trying to fast track its passage. We need all hands on deck to stop this power grab from getting through.
Supporters of the bill used an arcane Senate rule which allowed AB 84 to skip a hearing and a committee vote and head straight to the floor because they know if Californians have time to realize what is at stake, we won’t stand for this!
Don’t let Big Oil and special interests gain unprecedented influence over our lawmakers and our elections. Contact your State Senator today and urge them to vote NO on AB 84. Find their phone number here: http://www.ecovote.org/StopAB84
